Our Take
The first sentence tells you Lydia is dead. The novel spends 300 pages showing you everyone who failed her — which turns out to be everyone who loved her most. Ng makes the ordinary machinery of family into a slow catastrophe. The tragedy was always domestic, always quiet, always preventable.
