Our Take
Lieutenant Henry and Catherine Barkley fall in love at an Italian front hospital during WWI. Hemingway ends it the only way the war allows — not with a dramatic death scene but with Henry walking back to his hotel in the rain. The flatness of that final act is the novel's entire argument about what war costs.
